A drug is "a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure and prevention of medical conditions.
It is also used to enhance physical or mental well-being.” Drugs may be prescribed for short periods of time or on a regular basis.
Drugs ingested during pregnancy can affect the foetus in several ways depending on the timing, dose and the duration of use.
Knowing the critical period during pregnancy:-
1) This is 3-8 wks (4-10 wks from Last Menstrual Period)—embryogenic period.
2) It is the critical period of organogenesis, unprescribed medications during this period may cause malformations usually recognized at birth.
3) It is desirable to minimise drug use in pregnancy especially over the counter medications.
4) Always get prescribed medications during pregnancy and be regular at ante-natal clinics.
The key note is to use prescribed medications at ALL TIMES. And this is usually done by a doctor who would have taken a detailed medical history.
