PREVENTION OF CHAPPED OR CRACKED LIPS
We take good care of our body, wear nice clothes and look good, but the lips deserve as much attention as the body and should not be over-looked.
Any number of factors could result in chapped lips like weather, certain medications, excessive licking or infection.
Symptoms of chapped lips include flaking, dryness, sores, scales, swelling, and bleeding.
Some of the ways to combat dry lips are listed below:
Apply lip balm early enough: You should apply lip balm early in the morning and before bed. You can apply as often as may be required. You should also have your lip balm handy in case the lips get dry. Lip balm can be applied before the application of a lipstick.
Protect your lips during hot and cold season: Cold can cause the lips to crack, so, during low temperatures, you should make use of a scarf to protect your lips; same goes for hot temperatures, using a hat offers protection from the sun.
Avoid licking your lips: Licking the lips causes more harm than good. When you lick your lips, saliva dries quickly, causing the lips to become even more dry and flaky leading to cracks. Do not peel or bite flaky skin. Don't peel off flaky skin to avoid bleeding and swelling.
Make use of lip balm: Use a lip balm that is high in emollient. The lip balm should be able to lock in moisture and seal cracks and splits. Do not go for lip balm that contains too many chemicals. The lips will benefit from lip balm that contains ingredients like cocoa, almond, shea, coconut butter and olive oil.
Drink plenty of water: Dehydration causes cracks in the lips. So ensure to stay hydrated all the time.
