Keeping children safe is a journey that requires constant guidance, patience, and repetition.
In Part 1, we explored five key safety lessons every child should know. Now in Part 2, we’ll continue with the remaining rules—practical, easy-to-remember tips that will help your child avoid danger and grow into a confident, responsible individual.
6. Never Play with Fire or Sharp Tools
Curiosity can lead to accidents if children handle matches, lighters, knives, or other dangerous tools. Keep hazardous items out of the reach of children. Explain the risks in a way they understand.
7. Don’t Keep “Bad” Secrets from Parents
Kids should understand that some secrets—like birthday surprises—are fine, but others that hide unsafe or harmful behavior are not. Explain the difference between “good” and “bad” secrets. Let them know they won’t get in trouble for telling you something important. Always listen without judgement.
8. Know Emergency Numbers
Children should know how to call for help in case of fire, injury, or danger, and what to say when they call. Teach them your country’s emergency number. Practice explaining the problem clearly. Make sure they know their address.
9. Spot and Avoid Hazards at Home
Kids should be able to recognize warning signs and understand why certain areas or objects are off-limits. Show them hazard symbols and explain their meaning. Use games or visuals to make learning fun. Childproof dangerous areas and items.
10. Play in Safe Places and Avoid Risky Behavior
Children need to know where it’s safe to play and what activities could lead to injury. Set clear boundaries for safe play areas. Discourage dangerous climbing or rough play. Always supervise them near water or other risky spots.
By teaching and reinforcing these safety rules, you’re not only protecting your child today but also preparing them with life skills they’ll use for years to come. Remember—safety is learned through practice, patience, and open communication. Keep these conversations ongoing, model safe behavior, and watch your child grow up secure, empowered, and ready to face the world responsibly.
