The Decision: My name is Sixtus Ojimadu. I’ve always wanted to donate blood, but I kept putting it off. One day, I finally decided to do it! A friend shared a story about how donated blood saved her cousin’s life and how it is going to save women in childbirth, accident victims, cancer patients, sickle cell anaemia patients, etc. That was all the motivation I needed. I found the Trauma Care International Foundation (TCIF), a life-saving organization that gives hope and saves lives. I booked an appointment with them to finally donate blood. I was nervous but also excited at the same time!

Preparation Begin: I did some research on what to expect and how to prepare. I learnt that drinking plenty of water and eating a healthy meal before donating is important. I also learnt that getting enough rest and sleep helps make the process easier. I ate iron-rich foods before the donation day: spinach, beans, and some chicken.

The Day Before: The day before my donation appointment! I made sure to hydrate well throughout the day. I had a mixed feeling of excitement and also nervousness. What if it hurts? What if I feel dizzy afterwards? I reminded myself that thousands of people do this every day, and it’s for a great cause. Setting my alarm so I won’t be late!

Donation Day!: I arrived at the donation center, checked in, and filled out a quick health questionnaire. The staff was super friendly, which eased my nerves. A nurse checked my vitals, and soon, it was time to donate. The moment of truth! When the needle went in, it was just a tiny pinch! The process took about 10 minutes, and I felt fine. Afterwards, I was given juice and a cookie while I rested for a bit. The experience was much easier than I expected! I walked out feeling proud, knowing my donation could help save lives.

How I Felt Afterwards: I woke up feeling good—no dizziness, just a slight soreness in my arm, which is normal. I stayed hydrated and took it easy. I even got a special “thank you” text message from Trauma Care International Foundation for my act of generosity and kindness: Which says; “my blood would be used to save lives”! That really made my day.

Reflecting on the Experience: I can’t believe I waited so long to donate. It was such a simple process, and yet, it has the potential to make a huge difference in someone’s life. I’ve already decided that I’ll be donating again in a few months and also make sure that everyone around me does the same!
