The top motivation given by blood donors is "to help others." Others provide the primary excuse that they have never been asked to donate. You are vital to "asking" and enlisting others in support of this life-saving cause as the chairperson of your organization's blood drive.
1. Promote your passion: By promoting your blood drive with enthusiasm and a genuine connection to its importance, you can inspire more people to take action and make a difference!
2. Collaborate as a team: Recruit donors, set up appointments, assist with registration on the day of the drive, and organize a committee to oversee the blood drive.
3. Involve the leadership: Seek the cooperation of a prominent figure in your organization or church to publicize the blood drive, send out a personal email to all eligible donors, or take other action to encourage people to give.
4. Put the question out there: Asking potential donors to contribute one-on-one will allow you to give everyone a chance. Educate each prospective donor on the procedure and the lives that can be saved by giving blood. Even if a person is aware that they are unable to donate blood, they can still make a difference by volunteering to find potential donors, welcoming them as they register, or providing food to donors who have finished their donation.
5. Take a personal approach: Look for a coworker or fellow student whose life has been impacted by blood donation—either directly or via a friend or relative. Request their assistance in narrating the tale of how blood donation preserves and saves lives.
6. Every donation has the potential to save lives: Establish defined times for appointments and emphasize to each donor the significance of honoring their scheduled time.
7. Promote the drive: Use as many of the channels as possible to publicize and promote the event, including the internet, email, newsletters, bulletin boards, social media, etc. In high-traffic places such as conference rooms, restrooms, lobbies, elevators, lunchrooms, and hallways, post flyers, and pledge forms accordingly.
8. Create a challenge: Initiate a friendly competition between teams, organizations, or departments. Offer a prize to the group that donates the most blood.
9. Massive follow-up: Send emails or cards with appointment reminders to donors who have been scheduled. Post "Blood Drive Today" posters on the day of the drive, and follow up as necessary.
10 Celebrate, and thank donors and the organizing committee: After the drive, publicly acknowledge and thank all donors, blood drive committee members, and volunteers who helped make your drive a success.
